Why Hiring Caregivers for End of Life Care is Necessary?
Mrs. Usha Bharadwaj (name changed) had been diagnosed with a brain tumor which could not be operated upon and hence, the only treatment the doctors could recommend to her family was to take care of her at home.
Mrs. Bharadwaj was 77 years old and wife of a senior bureaucrat. She had traveled along with her husband across the length and breadth of the country, soaking in the joys and tensions that a government job brings with it. With both her children married and not living with her, this piece of news shattered the whole family and they were in mourning.
However, Mrs. Bharadwaj herself was in high spirits. She had lived a joyous life and wished to go too as she put it with a punch. Hence, to ensure companionship for her during the night and assist her for her toileting and bathing needs, her children hired a caregiver from YouCare Services, after duly sharing their requirements with the care manager who visited the family and after closely interacting with all the stakeholders found a match in Minu as the caregiver deployed for Mrs. Bharadwaj.
To say that the care receiver and caregiver took to each other like a fish to a pond would be an understatement. Not only did Minu ensure that Mrs. Bharadwaj ate, slept and kept herself healthy and hygienic but also her presence allowed Mrs. Bharadwaj to keep up her composed self, maintain her routine and make time for her exercises and card games.
As the months rolled by, slowly the disease started taking her toil on Mrs. Bharadwaj. Not only did she started finding it increasingly difficult to maintain her mobility but also started sinking into a melancholy of sorts. However, Minu did not leave her side even once. Now, taking care of the day shift while another caregiver took care of the night, Minu and Neelam ensured Mrs. Bharadwaj interacted with everyone in her home including giving instructions to the gardener, enquiring about the milkman’s daughter while keeping her dietary and medication reminders in mind.
Not being able to meet their parents daily,
Bharadwaj's children at least were comforted knowing their mother’s worsening condition was being taken care of in the best possible way. The caregivers ensured that while the children were home, they took care of all the chores such that the children could get to sit with their ailing mother and regale her with old memories and tales.
As Mrs. Bharadwaj neared her end, the caregivers never took a single day off, ensuring they were beside her even at the hospital. As she fell into a coma to never recover from it, it was the caregivers who gave support to the senior Mr. Bharadwaj, helping him with his mobility and dietary needs and ensuring he was healthy enough to make his rounds of the hospital.
As Mrs. Bharadwaj sadly passed away for her heavenly abode, her family was shattered. But, they took solace and pride in the fact that they had all as a family got to spend the last moments of their mother`s life regaling old memories and relishing the bonds she had nurtured. They were grateful for taking the decision to hire end of life care for their mother which spared the physical agony of looking after their mother but ensuring all her needs were attended to.
