How YouCare provided a turning point in Manju’s life
Being a single mother is not an easy job. Imagine working for more than 12 hours a day to earn the bare minimum wages and yet not being able to feed three teenage children. How hard would life be for her with constant pressure from in-laws for not being a good enough mother or daughter-in-law?
We are talking about Manju, a middle-aged woman who was widowed around 8 years ago. With her oldest daughter turning 18, and the other two children aged 16 and 10, she had to find a way to earn money to make a decent living to afford their education, her household expenses and save enough to maybe one day marry her daughter off.
Working as a freelancer wasn’t paying her enough to bring food on the table. The taunts and harassment of her in-laws for not doing a “proper” job made her life even more miserable. Manju had no idea what to do. She had lost all her confidence. Life looked desolate and dark to her.
It was then that she saw came across a mobilization drive by the YouCare Team. She decided to attend the orientation program conducted by the organization near her premises. After her interview and her background verification, Manju was put on shadowing for 7 days where she assisted an experienced caregiver and learned a few things about caregiving which she had no idea about while she was working as a freelancer.
Life began to change soon after her initial one week was over. Manju was deputed on an assignment to care for an army officer’s mother for 2 months. During this period, Manju also attended free training sessions by YouCare and learnt better grooming, soft skills and telephone etiquettes. She developed a good dressing sense and through role play activities and group sessions could present herself as an assertive caregiver.
As she learnt the finer nuances of caregiving as a beginner, her attitude improved as she became confident of basic care procedures like bathing and toilet assistance, bed making, first aid and CPR. She began to take decisions on her own and took pride in the work she was doing. As Manju grew in her role, she was assigned more patients, some requiring professional care at a hospital level. As her experience grew in YouCare, so did her salary and eventually, she started planning her daughter’s wedding as well.
Manju says she wants her daughter to become a caregiver like her and lead an independent life. The job has allowed her to cater to her family`s needs. She feels financially independent to take her own decisions while being able to carry out bank transactions or operating a smartphone to use WhatsApp.
